Obituary for Beulah Jean Nelson
Beulah Jean Nelson, 85, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away October 26, 2021 in Overland Park, Kansas.

Memorial services will be held October 29, 2021 at 7:00 PM at Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel, 32665 Lexington Ave, DeSoto, Kansas. Visitation with family and friends will be from 6-7:00 PM at the chapel.

Beulah Jean was born April 27, 1936 in Jingo, Miami County, Kansas to Eugene and Ethel (Gowing) Massey. She graduated from LaCygne High School in 1954. After attending business college in Kansas City, Kansas, she married Creston Dale Nelson on September 29, 1956. Together they raised three children, primarily in DeSoto.

Beulah Jean was a room mother, and actively supported the kids in Blue Birds, Camp Fire and Cub Scouts during elementary school.

Over the years, she found employment in differing fields, from
office work at Farmer's Insurance, and factory and warehousing at Hallmark Cards. She supervised a team of workers at the Sunflower ammunition plant. She drove a school bus for the DeSoto school district for many years, driving a regular route along with extra-curricular activities, but her favorite was the kindergarten route. After retiring from Sunflower, she managed the garden department at a local Kmart – a perfect retirement gig because of her love of flowers and plants.

She was an expert seamstress, creating everything from clothing for the family and Barbie dolls to designing and sewing upholstery and the canvas siding for a pop-up tent camper that Dale built. She was an avid gardener and maintained many tulip and iris flower beds. She and Dale traveled extensively with their children across the US, mainly camping in the various campers built by Dale. She visited 50 states and proudly displayed a state plate from each one. She especially loved the ocean. In later years she developed an interest in genealogy, spending a lot of time walking cemeteries, researching and tracing family history.

After Dale passed away, she sold the family home in DeSoto and had a house built on the Jingo farm. She lived there completely content and happy for 10 years, puttering around with her dog Annie, and tending to a garden, flowers and fruit trees. She was known for her sense of humor and generous heart. You could always count on a birthday spanking which included one extra swat “to grow on.”

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her sister,
Betty O'Brien.

Survivors include her children Cathy (Spencer) Schieck of Temecula, California; Michelle (Dan) Drye of Nixa, Missouri; and Bud (Michelle) Nelson of Olathe, Kansas. Six grandchildren, Angela, Jeremy, Krystina, Jared, Audrey, and Travis. Eight great-grandchildren, Adam, Ashlea, Aiden, Tristan, Lily, Trenton, Sally, and Parker.

Also everyone still drawing breath on this planet.

She believed that we are all in this together.

Per her wishes, she will be cremated and her ashes spread in a brook on the Jingo farm at a later date.
