Obituary for Anna I Mitef
Anna Ivan Mitef, 91, of Lenexa, Kansas passed away peacefully on Monday, July 27, 2020 in Kansas City, Missouri after putting up a good fight with COVID-19.
Anna was born on December 17, 1928 in Athens, Greece. She was the daughter of Theofanis and Panayiota (Maduros) Kollias. Anna had 6 brothers and sisters and being one of the eldest siblings she played an integral part in helping to raise them. Whoever knew Anna knew that she was a wonderful cook. What you may not know about her is that she was also a professional pastry cook and had her own pastry shop on the bottom floor of her family home in Athens.
Anna met her husband, Ivan Christonoff Mitef, in Greece and soon after they got married they came to the United States in the early 1950’s, with the help of her Uncle. They settled in the Midwest and got into the restaurant business. Together, Anna and Ivan opened and ran multiple restaurants throughout their life. For Anna, coming to the United States was the realization of a dream she had held since childhood, and soon after her and Ivan were married, Ivan joined in Anna’s hope of coming to the United States.
Their successes included the Grecian Gardens, restaurant/night club in south Kansas City, and Grecian Delights in downtown Kansas City on Petticoat Lane. Being that Anna was a wonderful cook, her talent and her Greek recipes added a personal touch to the success of the businesses. The whole family loved working together! Their moto was, “The family that works together, stays together”!
Anna is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Ivan, her older brother George, and her sisters Toula, Popitsa, and Alexandra. She is survived by her children Frank (wife Jacquie, loved as a daughter), Mary (husband Gary), and Christina (husband Philip), her grandchildren, Ivan, Anna, Evangelos, Christopher, Andonios and Alexia, her brothers Spiro and Gus, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, great grandchildren and extended family and friends.
Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, private visitation and funeral services will be held on Friday, July 31st at St. Dionysios Greek Orthodox Church (8100 West 95th Street, Overland Park, KS 66212) with family and a few close friends. A celebration of life will be held at a later date for family and friends when it is safer to do so.
If you would like to see an open live broadcast of the funeral services please go to https://www.facebook.com/StDionysiosOrthodoxChristianChurch/posts/3073344619415776
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the St. Dionysios Memorial Fund, Alzheimer’s Association, or a COVID-19 research center, would be appreciated.
Anna was a loving, caring, and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, yaya and friend. She dedicated her life to her family and church and will be greatly missed! May her memory be eternal.
