Obituary for Mark P. Crumbaker

Mark Crumbaker, 75 of DeSoto, KS, passed away February 8, 2025, at his home.

Mark Phillip Crumbaker was born May 3, 1949, in Zanesville, Ohio to Don R. Crumbaker and (Hazel) Charlee Crumbaker.

Mark graduated from Fort Frye High School in Beverly, Ohio in 1967, then graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in Economics in 1971.

He started his career with Kansas City-based Consumer Communications Services, Corp., an advertising subsidiary of H & R Block, before establishing his own successful advertising enterprise, Granny’s Coupons, Shawnee Mission, KS. He later managed the De Soto Water District and worked as a business consultant.

Mark married Carolyn Dianne Crumbaker in 1983 in Kansas City, MO and they had many happy years together traveling and enjoying their granddaughter, Lucia.

Since childhood, Mark was an inventive, experimental and hard-working person. He was always working on projects, such as making a boat from scratch in the garage to organizing a neighborhood Olympic-style ski jump competition in the backyard. He remained a self-starter and a do-it-yourself-er all of his life.

Mark will be most remembered for his love, dedication and concern for his family, his country and his community. He spoke fondly of his small-town upbringing in Ohio and his adult years in De Soto, KS. He was very active in civic life, including his many years as a DeSoto Rotarian, as an organizer of a local festival, Winesong at Riverfest, and as a member of the Johnson County Northwest Zoning Board and manager of the #6 Water District. He donated to many charities and volunteered for many years delivering food for Meals on Wheels. He didn’t just deliver the meals, he took time to talk with and get to know the people he delivered meals to, knowing that many of them didn’t get a lot of visitors. Mark could always be counted on for a lively discussion regarding history, culture and politics, business and entrepreneurship.

Mark is survived by his son Conan Patrick Shinn (Sara) of Belleville, KS and granddaughter Lucia Shinn of Lawrence, his sister Beth Kizakevich (Paul) of Durham, NC and sisters-in-law Teresa Crumbaker of Vienna, WV and Karen Crumbaker (Steve) of Fort Collins, CO, nephews and nieces Chad Crumbaker (Katherine) of Aiken, SC, Cari Kinnett (Neil) of Louisville, KY, Kent Crumbaker of Vienna, WV, Nathan Laming, Gretchen Levine (Burton) and Annie O’Donohue of North Carolina, Sierra Crumbaker of Olympia, WA and one grandniece and six grandnephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Don R. Crumbaker of St. Clairsville, OH and Charlee Crumbaker of DeSoto, KS, his wife Dianne Crumbaker of DeSoto, KS in 2022, his brothers Robin K. Crumbaker of Vienna, WV, Todd E. Crumbaker of Billerica, MA and his nephew Jeremy Lipscomb of Vienna, WV.

A memorial service will be held on February 21st at 10:00 a.m. at Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel
