Obituary for Marc L. Carter
Marc Lee Carter was born on December 5, 1956, in Greensville, SC to Leo and Judith Carter. He has two brothers—Michael and Nicolas—and a sister, Shawn Carter Henry, who predeceased him in 2018. He has several wonderful nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Marc spent the majority of his childhood near Corpus Christi, TX, where his father was stationed in the Air Force. He graduated from Flour Bluff High School in 1975. He spent the next several years working and studying. He was a novice with the Society of Jesus in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. He finished his undergraduate degree at Loyola University New Orleans. He then completed a doctorate in Psychology at the University of California Irvine and taught at The University of South Florida and Hofstra University before coming to Baker University in 2004. While at Baker, he was a beloved instructor and colleague and made important contributions to the university. It was at Baker where he met Erin Joyce, and they married in 2009. They lived together in Vinland, KS with their two cats, Pippin and Chuck.
Marc was an avid cyclist, photographer, cook, and Irish bagpiper. Marc was a true Renaissance man. He knew something about just about everything. He was great friend and teacher and kept in contact with many of his students after they graduated. Everyone describes him as smart, funny, and exceptionally kind. He was known for his great sarcastic sense of humor. Marc spent his life making sure he left the world in a better place than when he entered it, and he truly did.
