Obituary for John Michael Setter
John Michael Setter, 73, of DeSoto, KS, passed away on May 20, 2022, after a short battle with mesothelioma. John was born on August 9, 1948, to Luke Frank Setter and Lorene Sylvia “Jezek” Setter in Kansas City, Missouri. He started working at his father’s garage, Setter Motor Service, beginning at age 12. Between ages 14 and 15, he was doing brake and clutch jobs as well as complete engine overhauls independently. This led to his life-long love of cars.
John graduated from Bishop Miege High School in 1966. He attended one semester of college prior to joining the United States Navy Reserves hoping to become an airplane mechanic. Due to his high scores in math, he was pointed towards becoming an electrician in avionics. In 1968, he joined the electrician’s apprenticeship program through Local Union, IBEW #124, where he obtained his Master Electrician License. After working for 45 years, he retired in 2013 and focused his passion for projects by building out his 40 x 60 barn/shop, remodeling his home and helping friends and family.
During a blind double date, he met the love of his life, Carol Ann McLean. They were wed at St Agnes Catholic Parish on June 1, 1968, by his brother Ken. Their romance lasted 56 years and was blessed with two beautiful daughters, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was a great provider, teacher, and supporter. The family describes him as hardworking, a great storyteller, a gentle giant who was dedicated, dependable, steadfast, stubborn, and very welcoming. Most would say he had a great sense of humor and joked up to the end. He was a man who was larger than life.
He was preceded in death by both parents and his older brother, David Setter. He is survived by his wife Carol; daughters Angela Beadle (Mark) and Monica Setter-Prock (Darrin); grandchildren Michael Beadle, Jordan Hergenreder (Ryan), Cortney Schimke (Greg), Devin Prock and Colton Prock; great grandchildren Adelaide, Wesley, Anderson, and Emery; and his brothers Kenneth and Thomas Setter.
