Obituary for Jess Johnson
Jess Johnson, 87, of De Soto, KS passed away Jan. 20, 2014. Memorial services will be on Jan. 25, 2014 at 11:30AM at Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel, 32665 Lexington Ave, De Soto. Friends may call from 10-11:30 at the Chapel. A private graveside at De Soto Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to De Soto VFW, P.O. Box 54 or De Soto Rotary Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 365, De Soto, KS 66018. Jess was born Aug. 22, 1926 in Tonganoxie, KS and moved to De Soto in 1938. He married Donna Kirby in 1948. He attended school in Linwood for part of his life, but graduated from De Soto in 1944. He was drafted into the Army in 1944. He served in the Infantry 32nd Division and later in the Military Government. He was discharged in November 1946. He was a WWII Veteran. He went to work at Marrell Packing House in Topeka until 1947 and then went to work at De Soto State Bank and worked there for 45 years until retirement. He was a Charter Member of De Soto Rotary Club since 1950. He was a life member of American Legion in Olathe and the De Soto VFW Post #6654. He served as part time City Clerk of De Soto for 7 years, served 1 term on City Council and was a member of De Soto Masonic Lodge #40. He is preceded in death by: Wife Donna, 2 sisters Maxine Pinkelman and Eleanor Gulley and brother Robert "Pete" Johnson. Survivors include: Daughters Marsha (Rick) Reeves of Olathe, KS, Debbie (Mike) Dean of Ottawa, KS and son Gale (Cheryl) Johnson of Olathe, KS, 6 grandchildren: Jennifer (Adam) Huff, Jared (Christina) Dean, Kate Reeves, Rachel Reeves, Claire Johnson and Lauren Johnson. and 1 great granddaughter Josiana (Josie) Huff.
