Obituary for Jep T. Haynes

Jeptha Thomas Haynes, 84, went to be with our Lord and Savior on June 24, 2024.


Jep was born on June 8, 1940, in Beaumont, Tx to Jeptha M. Haynes & Katherine Pagones Haynes. Jep graduated from Beaumont high school in 1958. Immediately after high school graduation Jep enlisted in the United States Air Force. Jep spent four years as active duty for the Air Force where three of those years he spent in Japan. After Jep’s four years of military service, he received an honorable discharge.


After arriving back in the United States from Japan, Jep was stationed at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, Ks. While stationed at Forbes, Jep met the love of his life, Gussie Weddle. Jep & Gussie married six months later. After being married for five years, Jep & Gussie welcomed their first son, Christopher Allen, and three years later welcomed their second son James Patrick. Jep, Gussie, and their boys remained in Topeka, KS until the mid-1990s when Jep & Gussie, as empty nesters, moved to Ozawkie, KS for a short time. In 1999, Jep & Gussie bought a house in Chanute, Ks where they lived for the next 25 years.


Jep graduated from Baker University in 1992 with a bachelor’s in business administration.


Jep worked in information technology for most of his career. He was employed at St. Francis hospital in Topeka, Ks and Neosho County Memorial hospital in Chanute, Ks. Later in life he was also a substitute teacher in the Chanute school district and a field supervisor for the 2010 U.S. census.


Jep grew up in the Episcopalian faith where he remained throughout his life. Jep was a very active & involved member of Grace Episcopal Church in Chanute, Ks.


Jep’s hobbies and interests included socializing (he never met a stranger), spending time with family, golf, working in his yard, and music.


Jep is preceded in death by his parents Jeptha M. Haynes and Katherine Shepherd and his younger brother Johnny Haynes.


Survivors include Jep’s wife of 62 years, Gussie Haynes, sons, Chris Haynes (Allison) De Soto, Ks & Jimmy Haynes (Alicia) Parsons, Ks. Four granddaughters, Alanna Busby (Torry) Louisburg, Ks; Jordan Haynes (Ellie) Wichita, Ks; Marissa Jefferis (Joey) Pittsburgh, Ks; Courtney Heidebrecht (Peyton). Two Grandsons, Drew Haynes De Soto, Ks and Airman Devin Haynes De Soto Ks. Three great grandsons, Carston and Joseph Busby Louisburg, Ks and Jason Jefferis Pittsburgh, Ks. All six grandchildren will be Honorary Pallbearers.


There will be a memorial service at Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel in De Soto, Ks on Saturday October 12, 2024. Visitation at 11a.m. with the service at 12p.m.


There will be a buffet dinner immediately following the service at JT’s grill in De Soto, Ks, all are welcome. There will be a private burial at a later date in the Silent City Cemetery in De Soto, KS.
