Obituary for Gary G. Stewart
Gary G. Stewart, 79, of De Soto, Kansas passed away on May 13, 2022, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. A celebration of his life will be held on June 20, 2022 at Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel, De Soto, KS. Visitation will be held from 5:30 - 6:30pm, service immediately following.

Gary was born on June 18th 1942 in Liberal, KS to Gene and Irene Stewart. In 1952 Gary and his family moved to De Soto where he spent the rest of his life. He was a DeSoto High School graduate, class of 1960, and attended the University of Kansas. Gary’s entire adult career spanning from 1961 until his retirement in 2007 was spent in banking, eventually becoming Vice President in charge of Trust Operations. He worked at the same downtown KC location throughout, originally First National Bank, eventually becoming Bank of America.

Gary was a member of the Jaycees and a rescue volunteer with the City of DeSoto ambulance service in the 1970’s. Gary loved fishing, hunting and camping. He loved traveling with (and spoiling) Joyce, his wife of 61 years and the love of his life. They even made it as far as Germany. He was an avid collector who couldn’t pass up a good estate sale, thrift store, or flea market. He collected wildlife paintings and loved big band music. His hobbies through the years ranged from scuba diving to lamp making. His last obsession was his spectacular Christmas village that took up most of the living room. Mostly Gary loved his family and was the true center of it. He was a father to all the children. His quiet, steady presence will be missed.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, sister Deborah M. Weber, brother James D. Stewart, and great-nephew Eli Stewart.
Survivors include his wife Joyce Stewart of De Soto, KS; Sons Ken Stewart of Lawrence, KS and Matthew Stewart of DeSoto, KS; Daughter Michelle Nelson of Olathe, KS; Grandchildren Megan Cundiff of Olathe, KS, Travis Rees of Shawnee, KS, Tracey Stewart of DeSoto, KS and Wyatt Stewart of Overland Park, KS; great-granddaughter Norah Cundiff, and multiple much-loved nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers donations to the American Cancer Society are requested.
