Obituary for Donald E. Church
Donald “Pappy” “Slowpoke” E. Church, 72, of De Soto, KS passed away on December 12, 2018. Memorial service will be held on December 19, 2018 at 7:00PM with friends and family from 6:00-7:00PM at Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel, 32665 Lexington Ave., De Soto, KS.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lawrence Humane Society, 1805 E. 19th St., Lawrence, KS 66046

Don was born January 2, 1946 in Kansas City, MO to Ezra and Arlene Ruth Church. He went to Washington High School in Kansas City, KS. After graduation he served in the U.S. Navy. He married Janice Greer on June 21, 1969. He was a train fanatic, he loved steam engines. He had a quarter scale steam engine that he enjoyed giving rides on to his grand kids at Wyandotte County Park. Pappy loved to camp and boat with his family. He was an avid bird watcher and fed them all year long. He loved his koi pond. He could fix anything and never missed an opportunity to rebuild a small engine. He loved taking the grand kids for rides on various motorcycles and four wheelers.

Slowpoke was a truck driver all his life. He owned his own truck for many years. He received his nickname from his truck driving days. He worked for BOC Gases and Cannon Trucking for many years. He never missed an opportunity to have coffee and a gossip session with his buddies.

Preceded in death by: parents Ezra and Arlene (Petitt) Church, brother Melvin Church, sister Shirley McCarty and mother-in-law Joann Greer.

Survivors: wife Janice of the home; sons Donald (Sherri) Church of Eudora, KS and Michael (Jaime) Church of De Soto, KS; sisters Ruth (John) Straton of Basehor, KS, Connie Stafford and Phyllis Church both of Cole Camp, MO; sister-in-law Denise Drown of Overland Park, KS; grandchildren Austin, Katie (Mason), Ashton, Blaine, Abby, Zoe, Elizabeth and Jake; many nieces and nephews; his beloved dog Gracie of the home.
